Cyberpunk 2077 Inspired by Vampire: The Masquerade and Deus Ex

Maybe a Little Bit of Elder Scrolls, Too

Ever since we found out that Cyberpunk 2077, the pen-and-paper-inspired sci-fi game by CD Projekt RED, will use first-person gameplay, it’s been easier to find parallels. If word out of the studio is any indication, there’s never been a game quite like it. A look at marketing reveals some clear inspirations, however; and according to quest director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, the game bears a lot of similarities to some of the most successful RPGs.

In an interview with Spanish publication Area Jugones, Tomaszkiewicz explained how his team incorporated freedom of choice into their open world scenarios. With their first foray into the first-person perspective, CD Projekt RED took notes from the games that did it best. Specifically, Cyberpunk 2077 contains a lot of the freedom associated with games like Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, Deus Ex, and The Elder Scrolls. You can find a rough translation of Tomaszkiewicz’s words below.

“For my part, personally, Vampire: The Masquerade,” he said, “in terms of what an RPG is in first person and the way in which its non-linearity is built into the gameplay and dialogue. We are all gamers, and we enjoy different genres, but personally, I would say Vampire Bloodlines. Specifically because it is the perfect example of a first person game and an RPG that I personally enjoyed.”

“Of course, then there is The Elder Scrolls, although it is more difficult to compare it with the that because it is fantasy,” he added. “And I would also say the Deus Ex franchise, especially the original Deus Ex. That had a great impact on me as a developer and player back when I played it for the first time many years ago. And what I really liked about that game was completing the missions in many ways. It was not only based on dialogue decisions, since you also had the things that were on the map and its different points of entry that allowed you to get into buildings, as well as elements that opened different paths in the story. In short, both Vampire Bloodlines and Deus Ex– they are my two greatest inspirations.”

From the beginning, many spectators have likened the look of Cyberpunk 2077 to the Deus Ex franchise; therefore, it’s no surprise to hear confirmation of its influence. Of course, the game’s aesthetic takes many notes from other works in the Cyberpunk genre, specifically Bladerunner and Ghost in the Shell. We can probably expect some more groundbreaking reveals at this year’s E3, which promises to be big. Stay tuned for updates.
